The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) will on November 20, 2004, commence the third round of
accreditation of National Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes.
The accreditation exercise is coming on the heels of the successful completion of a review of the Minimum Standards,
which brought about increased number of credit load and the infusion of new themes into the present NCE curriculum,
such as Environmental/Conservation Education, STD/HIV/AIDS Education, Drug Abuse, Women Education and Population
and Family Life Education, besides the teaching of the Nigerian Constitution in General Studies.
Executive Secretary of NCCE, Dr Kabiru Isyaku, who flagged off the third round of regular accreditation in Abuja
at the weekend, expressed the Commissions determination to achieve its mandate of laying down standards for all
programmes of teacher education in the country through accreditation of certificates and academic awards outside
the university.
In this regard, he said the Commission had developed accreditation instruments designed to assess such areas as
academic matters, staff matters, facilities, funding and library and general administration of the institution.
Only academic programmes which have reached the second year of the NCE programmes are due for accreditation, he
stated.
He said the exercise, which is conducted every five years, ensures that colleges meet the minimum standards set
by the Commission, adding that institutions that fail to meet the minimum standards could earn interim accreditation
or denied accreditation.
In all the reviews and accreditation exercises, he said, NCCE was guided by the principle that a quality programme
is one which fulfils Nigerias aspirations for a sound, just and utilitarian education at all levels, especially
the primary and Junior Secondary School levels, that make up the Commissions main constituency.
Isyaku announced that some international agencies involved in quality assurance, including the Commonwealth of
Learning, were interested in participating in the accreditation programme for the purpose of understudying the
Commissions programme. The outcome of such visits may eventuate in exchange visits and bi-lateral educational
collaboration on quality assurance, he hinted.
