S/East roads to get priority in 2005 Ogunlewe
By Ben Duru
Correspondent, Owerri
Works Minister, Senator Adeseye Ogunleye, has pledged that roads in the South East would receive priority attention
since enough money has been provided for the ministry in the 2005 budget.
He said leaders of states in the zone should do as much as they could to ensure that the roads are adequately protected
when completed.
The minister, who was represented at the coronation ceremony of the traditional ruler of Umuezealama autonomous
community in Ehime Mbano Local Government, Imo State, said government was aware of the bad state of roads in the
South East.
He said arrangements have been concluded to ensure that the roads that have been started are completed by the end
of the year since the funds have been provided for in the budget.
Ogunlewe said the contractors handling such roads have been urged to ensure that they return to site, if they have
already moved out because government intends to sanction those that have not performed or do not have the capacity
to perform.
Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa said the state has provided the best environment for peaceful co-existence and
that any community with the intent of causing chaos would be dealt with.
He said the creation of autonomous communities was aimed at given the rural areas the opportunity of taking their
development into their own hands. He assured that government would continue to reward communities that have embarked
on developmental projects.
Udenwa said the government is doing everything to reposition the economy and he, therefore, called on industrialists
to join hands with government to achieve the goal.
He pledged that his administration would not only continue to assist those seeking to establish businesses but
would give tremendous boost to those who are embarking on industrial production.
Senator Ifeanyi Ararume (Okigwe) said plans have been concluded to ensure that all the roads in the South East
especially Imo are given top priority next year.
He maintained that he has been in constant touch with the ministry of works who has promised that such roads as
the Okigwe/Ihube/Umuahia, the Egbu/Mbaise/Umuahia, the Ihiala/Orlu/Anara/Umuelenmai as well as the Onitsha/Owerri/Aba
roads are completed.
He said efforts are on to ensure that enough funds are appropriated in the 2005 budget so as to give adequate funds
to the contractors adding that there is no doubt that these roads would face a lot of attention next year.
