Anambra crisis: Igbo in Kano blame anti-democratic forces
By Augustine Madu-west
Senior Correspondent, Kano
Igbo people living in Kano State have said enemies of Anambra State sponsored the renewed violence so as to facilitate
the declaration of state of emergency.
At the end of a five-hour meeting in Kano to appraise the situation in the state, Igbo leaders resolved that the
mayhem was the handiwork of politicians who do not wish the state well.
They said the crisis was a continuation of the activities of anti-democratic forces that were bent on dismantling
the democratic structures in the state.
A statement at the end of the meeting signed by the President General, Dr. Boniface Ibekwe and Secretary General,
S.M Okpara, read: The entire Igbo resident in Kano State wish to express their feelings over the crises in Anambra
and condemn it in its entirety.
We are calling on all the warring parties to lay down their arms and take to peaceful settlement of their differences
rather that embarking on violence which has claimed lives and property in the state.
They urged the South East zone to be wary of the activities of highly placed but disgruntled elements being used
by the powers that be to scuttle democracy in Anambra.
We are urging Ndigbo to be watchful of the activities of the anti-Igbo elements that are even our own brothers.
We should reject any move from any quarters, whether external or internal, at declaring a state of emergency in
the state or any South East, they said.
Any move to declare a state of emergency in Igbo land is not acceptable to us and we will resist it with every
diplomatic resources available to Ndigbo.
The group urged Ohaneze Ndigbo to rise to the challenge by restoring normalcy in Anambra.
