Commissioner opposes state-of-emergency in Anambra
By Bassey Inyang
Correspondent, Calabar
The political problem in Anambra State is not enough for the declaration of a state-of-emergency, Ebonyi State
Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Humphry Nwaobasi, has said.
He said since the problem is political it required a political solution.
Nwaobasi said this in Calabar at the weekend, adding that a state-of-emergency should come as the last resort when
the problem gets out of hand.
The commissioner said the solution to the Anambra crisis that resulted in the destruction of public and private
property last week Wednesday in Awka and Onitsha, is political.
He argued that the Anambra crisis is intra-party since the state is controlled the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
government, adding that there was ready political structures that could nip the problem in the bud. Nwaobasi said
the declaration of another state of emergency in any other part of the country would make it appear ridiculous
before the international community.
He said a state of emergency in Anambra barely six month after Plateau State suffered that fate would pose danger
to the democratic project.
When we talk of a state-of-emergency, we know it is the last resort. What is happening there requires political
solution. It is an intra-party problem. It is a PDP government therefore, there are structures already in place
to nip the problem in the bud.
The commissioner said the Igbo structures like the Ohaneze Ndigbo, the South East Governors Forum and the PDP Caucus
in the area are working round the clock to ensure that peace is finally attained in the state.
He said no Nigerian would be happy when public properties are destroyed, saying that what is happening in Anambra
called for serious concern.
