Ndigbo in Kogi drum support for Igbo presidency
By Bassey Inyang
Correspondent, Calabar
Awareness about the need for an Igbo man to be president of the country in 2007 has caught on in Kogi State with
Igbo people resident in Lokoja drumming support for the mission and asking that the message be spread to other
easterners nationwide.
This reinvigoration of the Igbo presidency project was sounded when the Senior Special Assistant to Abia State
Governor on Inter Local Government/State Relations, Chief Isaac Ogbonna, addressed a cross-section of the Igbo
people resident in the state.
Though they did not mention any candidate, it was a different scenario in Ebonyi State where one of Governor Sam
Egwus aide said he (Egwu) is the most suitable person the Igbo could adopt as their presidential candidate for
2007.
The aide, Humphrey Nwobasi, who is the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, said at the weekend in Calabar that
Egbu has what it takes to make a good president of Nigeria. Egwu has demonstrated his leadership capabilities
wherever he is called upon to serve the people, he added.
At the Lokoja event, Ogbonna said the Igbo who are predominantly businessmen come in contact with various shades
of people daily and that it is therefore important for them to begin to sound out other people on the need for
an Igbo man to be elected the president.
Ogbonna who was accompanied by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Inter-Tribal Relations, Alhaji Salisu Idris
called for a re-orientation amongst the Igbo and urged them to support only credible candidates.
The President-General of the Igbo Community Association in Kogi State, D.S. Inyamah, noted that Governor Orji Uzor
Kalu is a leader to whom every Igbo man irrespective of state of origin looks up to for direction.
Egwu aide said from the stand-point of performance, accountability and the crave to unite divergent views, he (Egwu)
is head and shoulders above others in the zone who are angling to be president.
He said though Egwu has not spoken on his ambition, the people are urging him to vie for the presidency in the
interest of the Igbo nation and Nigeria at large.
If the South East should be given the slot then the man is Egwu, he stated.
Nwaobasi said the governor is the man who could carry the country forward.
