One year after she was conferred with the award of the Commander Order of the Niger (CON), Hannah Idowu Dideolu
Awolowo, widow of elder stateman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has been decorated with a medal and presented a certificate
to make up for her inability to attend the investiture ceremony in Abuja.
The decoration was done on behalf of President Olusegun Obasanjo by Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Youth
Development and Special Duties, Francis Nweke, at the country home of the Awolowos in Ikenne, Ogun state at the
weekend.
Speaking on why the president wanted her decorated officially despite her inability to attend the occasion, the
minister said it is a way of giving recognition to people who have served the people and the country.
The minister also explained that the contribution of the Late çhief Obafemi Awolowo, which was continued
by his widow, is a testimony to how to contribute to national development, hence the resolve by the nation to recognize
her while she is still alive.
Responding, Mrs. Awolowo expressed utmost appreciation to the president whose idea it was that she be decorated
in her family home in Ikenne.
Her first son, Evangelist Oluwole Awolowo, who spoke for the Awolowo family, thanked the president for the gesture,
which he said the family considered a big honour.
Her decoration is coming after the Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniels, had joined to celebrate with her and
the family soon after the awards were announced.
