Atiku seeks unity among ethnic groups
From Simeon Nwakandu, Makurdi

VICE President Atiku Abubakar has appealed to Nigerians to encourage friendly relationships that cut across ethnic boundaries and considerations as a means of fostering unity in the country.

He has also pledged his continuous support for the Tiv nation, which has also conferred on him a chieftancy title.

Speaking during the burial of Mrs. Tabitha Ayu, the mother of the Internal Affairs Minister, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu in Gboko, Benue State at the weekend, Abubakar urged Nigerians to always extend hands of fellowship across ethnic lines in the interest of the nation.

He said that such relationships were necessary to help harness the potentials of the country. According to the Vice President, relationships devoid of ethnic prejudice will reduce the spate of strife in the land.

Abubakar promised to continue protecting the Tiv nation in line with the chieftancy title conferred on him by the Tiv Traditional Council.

"We must all seek ways to help one another irrespective of our tribal riots. It is such consideration that has made me feel at home in Tivland, though I am Fulani. Nigerians must embrace such inter-tribal relationships," he declared.

He prayed God to grant the Internal Affairs Minister, Dr Ayu, the fortitude to bear the loss of his mother, saying that a mother remained the most important person in the life of any child.

The Benue State Governor, George Akure, urged Nigerians to look up to God for their protection and guidance.

Ayu thanked all those who stood by him since his mother's demise for their compassion in his moment of grief.
