Moghalu links crisis to 2003 polls
From Oghogho Obayuwana, Abuja
FORMER national secretary of the opposition All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Chief George Moghalu, declared at the weekend that Wednesday's mayhem in parts of Anambra was a direct fall-out of the unresolved questions of the 2003 governorship elections in the state.
Moghalu said he would love the Federal Government, the people of Anambra State and Nigerians in general to consider the renewed attempt to find a lasting solution to the intractable socio-political problems of the state.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, Moghalu, who was also the ANPP governorship candidate in the said election, said: "I am embarrassed. So are the good people of the state. Indeed, many Nigerians feel betrayed that this sort of thing could be happening in a free, democratic society like ours. The whole world now sees us as a nation of brigands, of gangsters and of people who are not nicely contained by the law...But if nothing is done and urgently too, we may have a totally unmanageable situation on our hands..."
The party's chieftain stressed that the time has come for people of the state to hold those who preside over their affairs and those who take it upon themselves to cause social tension wholly responsible for the deplorable state of affairs in the state.
He continued: "I imagine the people rising and taking their destiny into their own hands and would you blame them? A situation where government is saying something else and the other group is saying quite another thing and all are simply watching... this is ominous. Therefore, let all good men not only speak but also
act before it is too late".
Moghalu also yesterday appealed to the Federal Government to live up to its responsibility of protecting and securing the lives of the citizens, noting that the "dangerous situation in Anambra has made his people a laughing stock in the eyes of a watching and sympathetic world".
"It is high time the authorities stopped sweeping potentially explosive happenings under the carpet. The whole world saw the farce that was supposed to be an election in Anambra. Those with courage also spoke then but everyone played possum. Now we are reaping the fruits of our collective neglect and greed. May God help us", he added.
