Group decries attack on media houses
From Bethrand Nwankwo, Abuja
NATIONAL leadership of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers' Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) has frowned at the destruction of the facilities at the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) at its corporate headquarters in Awka, Enugu-Ukwu and Onitsha.
A statement from the General Secretary of the union, Mr. Henry Odugala, issued yesterday in Abuja, said the incident in Anambra State has demonstrated the kind of tremendous hazards broadcasters are exposed to in the discharge of their professional responsibilities.
He said: "We shudder to imagine the danger the workers on duty faced while the state of anarchy lasted".
Odugala stated that as a union, they were convinced that human lives and public property should be properly secured at all times.
The union also called on the Federal Government to beef up security in broadcast outfits across the country so as to prevent a situation where broadcast workers and facilities become easy targets of mob action.
"We absolutely condemn these disgusting and horrendous acts from professional point of view", the statement added.
While condemning the acts, the union called for special compensation to be paid workers who were unduly traumatised by the unguarded attacks on their places of work in the mayhem.
