Zamalek sacks Stepanovic
EGYPTIAN giants, Zamalek, have sacked their German coach Dragoslav Stepanovic after a string of poor results.
Zamalek's indifferent start to the 2004/05 season has dented their hopes of winning the league title for the third successive year.
'Stepi' was given the boot at a meeting with club chairman, Dr Kamal Darweish, on Saturday.
His departure followed Friday's 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Asmant Souez, which left Zamalek third on the table, 10 points behind arch rivals, Ahly.
The German's future had already been under a cloud after last week's humiliating 4-2 loss to Ahly, which was Zamalek's first defeat since November 2002.
The defeat to Ahly ended a 52-match unbeaten run in the domestic league.
"We decided to take action before it was too late. We need to get our season back on track," Darweish said.
Ironically, former boss, Brazilian Carlos Capral, who led the club to their last African Champions League title in 2002, and local coach Farouk Gafar, have been touted as possible replacements for Stepanovic.
