Oni, Badejo win Late Obiawun tennis tourney
By Adeyinka Adedipe
REAL Admiral Anthony Oni and Biyi Badejo emerged champions at the first edition of Late Walter Obiawun tennis championship, which came to an end at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday.
The pair defeated Lanre Bankole and Charles Attah 6-2, 6-2 to lift the trophy. The event featured doubles event only with 26 players contesting for honours. Funmi Salami and Ekious Tekena were the only female players that took place in the event.
The final match saw Oni and Badejo dominating the game to the admiration of the few spectators who graced the event. The winners had given a notice of what to expect in the final when they defeated favourites, Sikiru Quadri and Charles Obosi in the second semi-final.
Speaking at the end of the championship, club chairman, Muyiwa Omisade, thanked the sponsors for sponsoring the event. He said that the staging of the championship has shown that millions are not always needed to host events.
He poured encomium on the late Obiawun, who was the first Nigerian member of the club while urging the sponsors to make it a yearly event.
"I must commend the sponsors of this championship. They have shown their love for Obiawun by hosting this event. They have also taught me a big lesson and that is you don't need millions to host an event. I will also strive to ensure that the club continues to have championships to keep the members busy at all times," he said.
Omisade also called on corporate bodies to sponsor championships in the club, adding that it is the key to sports' development in the country.
