Acting governor advises Muslims to eschew violence

The acting Governor of Kebbi, Alhaji Sulieman Argungu, has advised Muslims to use the lessons learnt from the Ramadan fast by restraining from acts of violence and acrimony.

In a radio broadcast to mark the end of the Ramadan fast and the Eid-el-fitir celebrations in Birnin-Kebbi, Argungu said it was time for the Muslim Ummah to be their brothers' keepers.

He also said Islam was a disciplined religion that preached respect and brotherhood of mankind and appealed to its practitioners to guard against the destruction of lives and properties just because of religious or tribal differences.

On the on-going economic reforms, Argungu said the reforms might have caused serious hardship on both the government and the governed but said he hoped that at the end the nation would emerge stronger, more united and prosperous.

He enjoined people of the state to bear the situation and show understanding as societal re-ordering and re-orientation were never easy.

``As we endure the current difficulties, we must take solace in the fact that at the end of every difficulty there will be growth and development,'' the acting governor said.

According to him, the state government has introduced a number of poverty alleviation measures, aimed at improving the lots of the people.

Argungu said efforts were geared towards the establishment of agro-allied industries, such as cassava processing and juice making, adding that the industries would provide jobs for youths.
