MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004           Electoral commission threatens candidates who violate guidelines The Anambra Electoral Commission [ANSIEC) says it will disqualify candidates who disobeyed electoral laws and guidelines for the Dec. 18 council polls in the state. The Chairman of the Commission, Chief Cornel Umeh, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that the commission had evidence that some candidates had launched their campaign ahead of the Nov. 17 date, fixed for the commencement of the exercise. Umeh explained that the decision to flag off the campaign on Nov. 17 was to enable candidates or people who resigned from their work to have at least 30 days to campaign for the polls. ``Anybody who starts campaigns before Nov. 17 is flouting the guidelines of the commission and the idea is to give a level playing ground to everybody,'' he said. The chairman stated that the commission would punish candidates or parties, who disobeyed its guidelines for the elections. ``We want to take the course of orderliness. We don't want unruly behaviour or lawlessness to reign'' he added.
