DAILY TRIUMPH-Enugu becomes FRSC zonal headquarters

                                                                                    MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004

Enugu becomes FRSC zonal headquarters

Enugu state has attained the zonal headquarters status of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Enugu takes over from Imo State which, until recently, hosted the zonal headquarters at Owerri.

Under the new arrangement, Abia, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo commands of the FRSC would be supervised from Enugu.

Mr Samuel Kwaghe, the FRSC's acting zonal commanding officer, said on Thursday in Enugu that he had visited all sectors under his command.

Kwaghe expressed his disgust with the low level of compliance with road safety rules and regulations by motorists.

``All bad qualities of road usage abound in all the states under the command,'' he noted.

``The poor road usage observed included over-loading, over-speeding, careless driving and wrong parking, answering calls while driving, and driving without seat belts.''

According to Kwaghe, ``Many motorists in the four states visited were unco-operative and hostile to the corps officers''.

Nonetheless, he stressed his resolveto change the situation, saying: ``All sector commanders and otshould do their work fearlessly, and without supervision.

``That is the mandate of the President and the Senate to the corps.''

According to him, ``public enlightenment will be sustained to safeguard the lives of all road users.

``But we also need the support of state governments under this zone, as well as the full co-operation of all road users.''

``Meanwhile, all officers and other staff of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, as well as Okada riders should from now appear in uniforms for easy identification,'' Kwaghe added.
