MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004           Igbo unions resolve one-year-old crisis The one-year-old crisis, which engulfed the Igbos community in Rivers and Bayelsa states was finally resolved with the election of new officers to run the affairs of a united union, the Federated Igbo Congress (FIC). The election, which was held in Port Harcourt, followed the end of a legal tussle, which was won by the FIC. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a Port Harcourt-based lawyer, Mr. Cosmas Enweluzor, was elected the president general of the congress while Chief Peter Chikere emerged as the secretary-general. In his post election speech Enweluzor, said that the Igbo anywhere in Nigeria wanted to correct the false impression that they were not united. He said that there was no better time to unite the Igbos than now when they wanted to actualize their right of presidency in the Nigerian project. The legal practitioner commended the current leadership of the Ohaneze ``for giving the ethnic group a sense of direction and responsibility� and urged Igbo�s in Rivers and Bayelsa to forget past acrimonies. Enweluzor, who promised to steer the FIC on the part of industry, justice and respect to constituted authority, urged journalists to always be constructive in reporting issues that had to do with social cohesion in the country. ``I want to thank the press not blowing the crisis in the Igbo community Rivers out of proportion because doing so would have impinged on the wider interest of national stability,'' he said. Enweluzor congratulated the Muslim community in Rivers for observing the Eid-El-Fitri peacefully.
