MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004           NGO advises NLC to shelve strike An Abuja-based NGO, The Citizen Compact, has advised the NLC to shelve its proposed nationwide indefinite strike slated to start on Nov. 16. The organisation instead called on the NLC to opt for ``massive sensitisation and enlightenment of the public on the benefits of government's home grown reforms''. In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the weekend in Abuja, the group stated: ``The burden of explaining the reforms to the public falls squarely on the shoulders of the leadershipof the NLC''. We call on the NLC to shelve its proposed strike because incessant strike had always led to polarisation, stereotyping and marginalisation.'' It stated that although the reforms were biting due to the holistic, integrated and multi-pronged approach of government, embarking on strike and aborting the reform agenda would amount to a short term palliative that would only postpone the doomsday. It noted that responsive governments and societies could better be chastised and sanitised through speeches, debates and discussions no matter how unpleasant, than through violence. It called on the NLC to embrace constructive dialogue with government and its agencies with a view to finding lasting solution to the problem.
