MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004           Nigeria loses N364bn to oil bunkering yearly Stories From CHRISTIANA GOKYO, Jos IT has been observed that Nigeria loses about N364 billion yearly to people who steal Nigeria's crude oil. This was disclosed in Jos at the 60th meeting of the General Church Council (GCC) of COCIN by the COCIN president, Rev (Dr) Hexander Mamdip Lar, who also asserted that about 50 million dollars loss was being incurred weekly. He said while people have continued to live in poverty, few people have continued to robe the nation of legitimate earnings. He said the Niger-Delta states should be fair and do more in the distribution of resources to the people, explaining to oil companies operating in the region to improve on their community relation so as to be channels of blessings to their host communities. The president further called on the federal government to improve the operational capability of the Nigerian Navy to police because of the territorial waters and swamps against sea pirates and illegal bunkerers who are sabotaging the country's economy. Rev. Lar, further stressed the need for the federal government and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to change and refine their techniques and policies, saying that national wealth is for the Nigerian people. According to him, it was unfair for government to continue to increase prices of petroleum products without corresponding improvement in the living and working conditions of the Nigerian people. He urged government to continue to learn to listen to the complaints of the people.
