MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004           N20bn River Niger dredging begins 2005- Minister Minister of state for transport, Alhaji Muhammad Musa, has said the N20 billion dredging of the Lower Niger River will commence next year. Musa told newsmen in Jos at the weekend that N5 billion had already been appropriated for the project in the 2005 budget. Another N1 billion meant for the project, which was tied down by five banks in the Petroleum Tax Fund would soon be recovered by the government for the commencement of work, he announced. The minister said the initial dredging job would be completed in 18 months, after which the second phase of dredging would cover the Upper Benue River. According to him, ``the dredging project was inherited from the defunct PTF, and there has been no appropriation for it after the PTF, except in the 2005 budget. ``We hope that the money appropriated for the project will be approved by the National Assembly for work to commence.'' Turning to other matters, Musa said that work on the four freight stations and four inland container depots in the country would begin soon. ``In fact, the government is already putting finishing touches to see to the successful take-off of the projects,'' he said. According to Musa, ``the Nigeria Railway Corporation has ordered and got all the necessary items for the extension of a railway track to the Jos Inland Container Depot, which is just three kilometres from the site. ``A contract will soon be awarded for the project,'' he added.
