MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004           Road accident claims 20 lives A tragic road mishap, along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway involving three vehicles, has claimed about 20 lives, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports. NAN gathered that the accident which occurred about 7pm on Wednesday at Uratta junction, near Aba, was caused by a fire outbreak in one of the vehicles involved in the accident. NAN further gathered that about 14 persons were burnt to death on the spot, while others sustained various degree of injuries. An eyewitness account said that a petrol tanker with registration number Lagos HK 185 EKY, stopped at the junction, following a leakage of the product from the vehicle. The leakage according to the account, attracted people from the neighbouring area, who thronged to the spot to scoop petrol. Tragedy however, struck when a spack from the exhaust pipe of a Toyota Corolla which attempted to manoeuvre through the spot caused an explosion. It was learnt that about five occupants of the Toyota car and those that came to scoop petrol were burnt in the fire. A luxury bus with registration number Enugu AL 659 UWN said to be stationary on the roadside as well as the tanker were also burnt in the fire. Many others, who reportedly sustained serious injuries, were taken to different hospitals, and it was learnt that six of them died between Thursday and Friday at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba. Efforts to get comments from the authorities of the hospital failed, but it was gathered that more than 10 persons were brought to the hospital``under critical conditions .''
