MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2004           Under-19s back in contention Nigeria's female Under-19 team, the Falconets, are back in contention in the Fifa Under-19 Championship in Thailand after they defeated highly-fancied Brazil 3-2 on Saturday at the 700th Anniversary Stadium. Two quick first-half goals by Cynthia Uwak and Stella Godwin and a third by the brilliant skipper Akudo Sabi at the death gave Nigeria their first points of the championship after they lost their opening fixture by the odd goal to China. Uwak got Nigeria in front after only nine minutes following a good combination play with Stella Godwin, who also got on the scoreboard five minutes later with a free kick. Brazil were reduced to ten women after 35 minutes after one of their defenders was given the marching orders for an off-the-ball incident. But the South Americans came back into the game in the 55th minute through Martha before they drew level with seven minutes left on the watch. Nigeria, however, got full marks when inspirational skipper Akudo Sabi's free on the death beat goalkeeper Thais for the winning goal. China now lead the group with maximum six points after they beat Italy 2-1 also Saturday while Nigeria climbed to second spot courtesy of their win over the Samba girls.
