NLC suspends strike

Stories from KABIRU YUSUF & ATIKU S. SARKI, Abuja

THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its planned nationwide strike action scheduled for today over increased fuel prices.

Labours decision to suspend the strike was reportedly informed by the federal government's decision to reduce the fuel price from N55 to N49 per litre as recommended by the Senator Ibrahim Mantu palliative committee.

Earlier yesterday morning, the leadership of the NLC had led multi-religious prayers session at Labour House, Abuja aimed at ensuring that government listened to the voices of reason.

A source close to the labour leaders informed our correspondent the suspension of the strike was however, temporary to enable it observe whether government will ensure enforcement of the new price regime or it will just be another ploy to deceive Nigerians as it did in the past.

"Last time the court ordered the government to revert to the old price while NLC should suspend its strike but what happened?'' the source queried.

Our correspondent reports that markets and filling stations in Abuja were yesterday filled to capacity as people embarked on panic buyings due to the fear of the unknown.

As a result, prices of commodities were said to have shot up while petroleum black marketers had a field day with a jerrycan of 10 litres sold at N1,300 in addition to long queues.

To carry their threats of dealing with labour leaders who attempt to force the strike actions, the police were also seen combat ready at various locations in the Federal Capital Territory.
