Ngige rejects 'local' police unit
From Chuks Collins, Awka
FOR its alleged ignoble role in the mayhem visited on Anambra State, its governor, Dr. Chris Ngige has requested the re-deployment of the Mobile Police Unit 29 Awka, from "sensitive government locations" in the state.
In a personally signed letter marked ANGH/009/x/103 to the State Police Command boss, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu in Awka, the state capital yesterday, the governor objected to the posting of officers of the Mobile Police Unit led by one Evans Ebbe based on the alleged role they played on the days the mayhem lasted.
The governor's letter read inter alia:
"I wish to bring to your attention my objection to the posting today of men in the above unit (MOPOL 29) under the Command of Suprintendent of Police Evans Ebbe, to sensitive government locations, particularly to the governor's Lodge, Awka. This has become necessary because of the eye witness account of the role of Mr. Ebbe in the wanton destruction of government property by hired thugs and hoodlums, and the subsequent mayhem unleashed on Anambra State.
"Events unfolding disclosed that Mr. Ebbe conspired, aided and abetted the marauders who looted, plundered and torched government establishments, particularly the Governor's Office, Deputy Governor's Office and the legislator quarters. He was also seen assisting Mr. Chuma Nzeribe and his follow miscreants when they entered the governor's office, ransacked and looted the documents before setting it ablaze."
In view of the foregoing, Ngige went on, "I would request you to withdraw the men of this command from the establishment referred to above and replace them with officers of the other commands from Ebonyi MOPOL 32; Abia MOPOL 28; Imo MOPOL 18 and Enugu MOPOL 3 who are now in the state on the order of His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic."
Ngige urged the state Police Command, to take the directive seriously and act immediately.
The receipt of the letter dated Nov. 16, 2004 was confirmed by the command by one Sergeant Earnest Ahee in the commissioner's office.
Meanwhile, the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in the state has lauded the restoration of police security details to the governor.
According to its chairman, Chief Sylvester Nwobu-Alor, the development was welcome, especially when the political tumoil, which erupted last week in the state tended to engulf the whole nation.
The CNPP chairman condemned the act of looting, vandalisation and torching of public property by thugs.
