2005 Budget: Minister Gets Ultimatum to Defend Appropriation
From Kola Ologbondiyan in Abuja, 11.18.2004
Senate Committee Chair-man on Agriculture, Sena-tor Bode Olowoporoku, yesterday handed down a 24-hour ultimatum to the Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Adamu Bello, to appear before his committee to defend the ministry's 2005 Budget or incur the wrath of the Senate. Adamu's absence forced the Committee to abort its meeting yesterday as the members took their turns to disparage what they termed the Minsiter's "disregard" for the committee. An enraged Olowoporoku, who refused to heed the pleas of the Minister of State, Bamidele Dada's explanation that his boss travelled for Lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia, said, "we are not happy that the Minsiter is always absent at any meeting to which the committee had invited him. "This is the second time. Last year too, he was absent from this type of budget defence meeting. His absence indicates disregard for the committee which has the power to oversee budgetary appropriations for his ministry," Olowoporoku asserted. According to him, "the President would not have granted leave to the Minister at this period of budget preparations. We are calling the attention of the Presidency to this. It is an act of indiscipline. This is the way I look at it," he said. In handing down a 24-hour ultimatum for the Minister to come and defend the Ministry's budget, Olowopo-roku said "if he (Adamu) failed to appear again, the nation would deal with him." But Dada told newsmen that the the disposition of the committee "has nothing to do with the work of the Ministry. let us put personal conflicts aside and move ahead with the national assignement by moving agriculture forward for this country and fulfil our needs."
