Should Joshua Dariye return as Plateau State Governor after the end of emergency rule?
Nwuche Calls for Justice in Niger Delta
11.18.2004
Prince Chibudom Nwuche, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has called for Justice and equity as the basis for the permanent solution of the Niger Delta crisis. He made this call at the 42 birthday of Chief Diepreye Alaimeiyesigha on the 16th of November 16 at Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. During his remarks, he praised the struggles of Alaimeiyesigha and the other South South governors for resource control and the fairer sharing of revenue accruing from oil productions. He lamented the situation where the indigenes of the Niger Delta were denied participation in the oil sector including the provision of oil services and the ownership of acreages and Oil Prospecting Licenses (OPLs), downstream opportunities including the imports/exports of crude/refined products. He called for justice and equity also in the employment of the youths of these areas in oil producing companies and urged the governors to come together and demand that oil producing companies reserve some percentage of the vacancies for the indigenes of the oil producing areas. In this regard the governors should set up a monitoring body to ensure that the employment quotas are filled up fairly. He commended the efforts of the governors of the South South to reconstruct the East West road traversing Port Harcourt, Bayelsa, Delta and Edo states up to Lagos state saying that it was unfair that the ministry of works has ignored this road for years and that this is one of the major roads that links the South South to the rest of the country and noted that the road is now a seasonal road and a single carriage way and that this is an eloquent testimony of the marginalisation of the people of the South South. Ideally speaking, the Federal Government and the ministry of works ought to have dualised this road knowing the level of investment required and that the funds allocated to the NDDC will not be adequate to carry out such major projects and therefore urged the governors of the South South to make sure that they achieve this and leave it as a collective legacy. He noted the humility, amiable nature and accessibility of the governor, saying those who have a deeper understanding of the essence of life know that power is ephemeral and that Alaimeiyesigha has demonstrated that he understands the essence of life by the way he has been carrying his duty as the governor of Bayelsa State.
