Pensioners Thank Saraki
From Tunde Sanni in Ilorin, 11.18.2004
Pensioners in Kwara State yesterday literally stormed the Government House Ilorin, to thank Governor, Bukola Saraki for alleviating their poverty. Saraki seized the opportunity to call on them to contribute their quota to the development of the state. Saraki, described them as experienced civil servants, adding that they could make themselves available in the area of agriculture, agro-allied sector and other areas that government needed partnership with private sector as part of efforts to industrialise the state. Stressing the need for peace and stability in the state, he said nothing could be achieved in an atmosphere devoid of peace. He said, "in the absence of peace and stability, there is nothing that can be done. But when you have peace and stability, there is much money for you to pay workers, pensioners and do the right things." He said as government who believes in the well being of its citizens, his administration would continue to embark on programmes that would impact positively on their lives. Earlier, chairman of the pensioners, Alhaji Ayinde Alanamu, has thanked the governor for the settlement of the disparity of 1995 group of pensioners which he said had been on since 1995 and the implementation of the 142 per cent pension increase for state pensioners which agitation began on May 1st 2000. He said, "all these two burning issues have now become things of the past, but leaving behind 142 per cent pension increase for local government pensioners unsettled." He pleaded with the governor to consider and approve 142 per cent increase for local government pensioners that is being prepared by the Local Government Service Commission.
