Varsities Research, Devt Fair Holds Tuesday
By Bukola Olatunji, 11.18.2004
New fufu flour production technology, unconventional field resources for rabbit production, manufacture of low fat meat products with local ingredients, Phytomedicine development from indigenous medicinal plants and a novel Antisnake Vaccine Discovery are among 250 research works that will be on display at the first ever 'Nigerian Universities Research and Development Fair' (NURESDEF), scheduled to begin in Abuja on Tuesday. Organised by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the three day fair, which draws participants from all Nigerian universities, will be declared open by President Olusegun Obasanjo. Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Peter Okebukola said prizes await the best 10 projects at the fair. He said calls have been made, in recent times, for universities, especially in developing countries to focus their research agenda to be more relevant to local needs. "In Nigeria, universities are heeding this call yet the society is hardly aware of the interesting and 'earth shaking' research that Nigerian academics have engaged themselves. The infamy of sale of handouts and grades and sexual harassment by a few academic staff has dimmed the bright lights of exemplary teaching, research and scholarship by many. The need to show the world that Nigerian universities are worthy of reckoning in research is the stimulus for organising NURESDEF", he said. It is expected that the fair will provide an excellent opportunity for the academia to demonstrate their research capabilities to industry and potential international partners and donor agencies; provide opportunities for researchers to share their knowledge and expertise and suggest new projects and future collaborations; provide a platform for future networking and collaboration among co-researchers and between them and industry; and facilitate the diffusion of research and development output into the national economy. The major objectives of the fair which will hold at the International Conference Centre, Abuja he said, are to: •exhibit innovative research projects and their outputs from Nigerian Universities. •highlight innovations and creative efforts of research and development in Nigerian Universities. •provide opportunities for networking and collaboration among institutions and between them and industry as well as with institutions abroad. •provide a forum for industry to select research outputs for further development for mass production and commercialisation, and avenues for attracting support for ongoing development- oriented researches from the organized private sector and international development agencies.
