Odili Stresses Need for Acceptable Census Figures
From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt, 11.18.2004
Rivess State Governor, Dr Peter Odili, has harped on the need for a genuine and acceptable census figures in the 2005 population census, saying wrong meanings attached to previous exercises had made it impossible to have a figure that reflects the true population of the country. Odili, while inaugurating the state 2005 National Population Census Publicity Committee, noted that the nation has not been able to have a census that truly reflects the true population of the country. He said an accurate figure was necessary for proper and effective planning and equitable distribution of amenities, decrying misconceptions that it was important to generate many numbers, to attract federal patronage, provision of amenities in communities and rating, in terms of relevance. He urged members of the Committee to carry out proper enlightenment on the importance of the exercise, to avoidfigure manipulation. Committe chairman, Mr Magnus Abe, frowned at the situation where people who reside in a particular part of the country leave such areas for their home states during census. Abe, also the state commissioner of Information, said such habit had been known to stretch existing infrastructure, as the people would often return to the same place they left at the end of the exercise. "Let it not be like past exercises where people would live in one state from January to December, but when it is time for census, they run to their homes to be counted while the actual amenities that they would require are situated where they live." He called for support from the people of the state, particularly local government council chairmen whom he said could establish similar committees in their councils to enable the message get to the grassroots.
