CNPP Traces Mayhem to Guber Elections
From Charles Onyekamuo in Awka, 11.18.2004
Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Anambra State chapter, has said the two-day mayhem which took place last week was part of a chain of actions and reactions emanating from negative forces that visited the April 2003 gubernatorial elections in the state. A statement signed by Chief S. Nwobu Alor, Chairman, CNPP, Anambra said the political coalition noted that the 2003 general elections was a rape of democracy, assault on justice and an overthrow of conscience, which it claimed laid a foundation for enduring crises with major combatants fighting over their booty. "Now a scene is set for the last act in the long tragi-comedy, and the actors are on rampage, destroying property, burning houses, maiming people and disrupting social order. "We are grateful to Mr President for his latest intervention, but security watchers are of the opinion that no amount of peace talks, peace accords or reconciliations will be fruitful without restoring justice. "Therefore, the only panacea to Anambra crisis is to revisit and ensure justice on the issue of 2003 gubernatorial election in Anambra state. That done, peace will automatically return to the state. "I wish to use this opportunity to appeal to all Anambrarians, the political class and corporate organisations to ensure Justice, equity and good conscience in everything they do or say: "The state is now in a state of turmoil, loaded with time bomb, in which one wrong step can lead to apocalyptic Armageddon", the statement said.
In its reaction, the statae chapter of the Civil Liberties Organisations(CLO) in a statement signed by the state chairman and Legal secretary, Mr Emeka Umeagbalasi and Chuka Obele-Chuka respectively said the reported mayhem has also raised serious questions over the source and fate of an estimated 15,000 illegal arms and other dangerous weapons and their end-users in Anambra state. Contending that in moments of social disorder and political instability, the police serve as their anti-dote, the CLO said it was baffling that the Police became an accomplice in a social dis-equilibrium, adding that the force with about 319,000 officers and men, and with about one million weapons in their armoury could not tame an uprising orchestrated by a few heartless crooks, masquerading as political god fathers.
