Minister’s Special Assistant Removed
•As FG approves N50m for Pro-league From Juliana Taiwo in Abuja, 11.18.2004
The Head of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Pro-league, Salihu Abubakar may have been removed as the Special Assistant to the Minister of Sports and Social Develop-ment, Col. Musa Mohammed (rtd). THISDAYSports gathered from a source at the Ministry that Abubakar was handed his termination letter from the office of the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Solomon Matakanri on the grounds that he could not continue to hold two positions both in the NFA and at the Ministry. Also, THISDAYSports scooped that the Federal Government has approved the release of N50 million for the Pro league, which is to operate independent of the NFA. It is an autonomous grant to enable the league kick off and it will operate from the former Team Nigeria office in Abuja. It is also to constitute a seven-man board with Abubakar approved by the Minister to be its scribe, an appointment club owners have rejected. Abubakar has been fingered in the cold war raging between the NFA and the Ministry and has led to an alleged threat by the NFA management to take the Ministry to court if their rumoured sack is carried out. A source at the Glass House told THISDAYSports that the contract was signed on January 8th 2002 for a four year period and are insisting they will not be forced out before the expiration of their contract. THISDAYSports also learnt that the sack intent has also been extended to the Permanent Secretary and the Director of Sports in the Ministry whom the Minister wants removed at all cost. "Though they pretend to have a cordial relationship, the Permanent Secretary and the Minister hardly discuss issues regardless of how useful it will be to the development of sports. This has resulted to the Minister not giving his blessing to a lot of proposals submitted by the Permanent Secretary even if it would be beneficial to sports development," the source said.
