LAGOS—A CHIEFTAIN of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos, Chief Lanre Razaq has denounced the convocation of a Sovereign National Conference saying it is not the ultimate solution to Nigeria's numerous problems. In an interview, Chief Razaq said while the clamour for a conference appeared good, the modality of choosing those who will make up the conference could pose a problem.
Said he, “Nigerians' call for a Sovereign National Conference is a good thing, but how is that so feasible? How do you bring people together on this matter? Who and Who is qualified to attend the conference? Will it be based on ethnic nationality grouping or on political structure nomination?
We have 774 local government in the country and those proposing and agitating for national conference are the same people creating imbalances in the political structure.”
In addition, he said that “ if we call delegates from 774 local governments to come together to discuss this issue, how best can we go? I believe the present political structure on ground is sufficient enough to discuss as national issue. But people who cannot look at what it take to bring people together to discuss national issue will be calling for sovereign national conference . What happens to the political structure on ground? Are we going to dismantle the National Assembly, Executive and Judiciary and start afresh?
The PDP stalwart further explained that there are indeed pressing issues in this country that need to be addressed but stressed that convening a national conference will not be the panacea for resolving such anomalies.
“There are problems in this country that need to be addressed, no doubt about that, but I don’t believe national conference is the best answer to these problems, because the military has done a lot to bring about imbalance in the political arrangement in the country and what are the mechanisms we can use to correct these imbalances? They are not yet available,” he said.
