ABUJA — THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has directed Cross River State Governor, Mr. Donald Duke and the State House of Assembly to reinstate the elected Chairman of Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the State, Dr. Salem David Joshua, within a week from yesterday, Thursday November 18.
The directive was issued at the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday. A statement signed by National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Venatius Ikem confirmed the party's directive.
Following the removal of Dr. Joshua by the House of Assembly on the orders of Governor Duke, purportedly over a communal clash in the Local Government, a new Chairman was appointed by the Governor and had been sworn in.
But there have been reports confirmed by NWC members at the National Secretariat of the party that Dr. Joshua was removed because he challenged Governor Duke over illegal deductions from the May 2004 allocation to the council.
The NWC has also, according to the one-page statement, directed the Imo State Chapter to remove the State Secretary, Mr. Okechukwu Dike and the party Chairman of Ihette Uboma Local Government Area, Mr. Collins Nwachukwu for anti-party activities.
The statement said further: “The NWC also expresses concern over the violence that erupted during a rally to receive new entrants into the party in Kogi State.
“The NWC condemns the resort to violence as a means of settling political differences and resolved to await the report of the Committee investigating the case in order to take the necessary disciplinary actions.
“The NWC notes the fatherly advise of the Oba of Benin, Omo n’Oba n'Edo, Erediauwa on the resolution of internal conflicts in the party as reported in some dailies and wishes to assure the respected royal father that we have to a large extent ensured cohesion in our party in spite of our enormous size and multiplicity of interests.
“While the party believes it is doing its best in maintaining stability in the polity, we however call on our traditional rulers to refrain from meddling in our internal affairs, in order not to politicize their revered institutions.”
