UMUAHIA—EMBATTLED Governor Chris Ngige of Anambra State says he is optimistic that peace will finally return to the state going by the present disposition of his opponents in the on-going political crisis in the state. The governor who spoke to reporters at Owerri airport on his way to Abuja believed that his opponents “would change their minds and see the need for peace especially if they go to Anambra to see the level of destruction.
“Even after warring in the jungles the generals go to round table to discuss peace,” he stated. According to the governor, several peace meetings had been scheduled in the nation’s capital to resolve the crisis including the one by the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He implored the people of Anambra State to continue to have faith in God and be strong, adding that everything would soon be alright.
Governor Orji Kalu who also spoke on the situation in Anambra explained that he had intervened to quicken the peace process in that state. " I am going to meet with Governor Ngige and Chris Uba and we will all talk everything over in the interest of the people of that state,” he promised.
He observed that what happened in Anambra can never happen in any country where there is a serious government, saying that it was unthinkable for law enforcement agencies to be watching people destroy government property. The properties destroyed he noted do not belong to Ngige adding that they would still be rebuilt with public funds.
He pleaded further, “Let these people allow this democracy to work. But my assurance is that we will do everything possible to ensure that a lasting peace returns in Anambra.
Governor Ngige arrived Abia State from Abuja on Tuesday in company of a few of his aides. Still looking worried, he held discussions with his host, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu after which they left on a chartered flight to Abuja to continue with discussions aimed at restoring peace in the troubled state.
