The House of Representatives has summoned the Inspector General of Police, Mr Tafa Balogun and the Director General of the State Security Services (SSS), Col. Kayode Are (rtd), over the recent political crisis in Anambra State.
The security chiefs are expected to present reports on the security situation in the south eastern state and explain the roles of the police and the SSS in the crisis which has apparently defied solution.
The Speaker of the House, Hon Aminu Bello Masari, gave the order yesterday in his office in Abuja when a delegation of the Anambra State Assembly visited the National Assembly to comp-lain over the insecurity in the state and threat to their lives. The Assembly members were led by the Speaker, Mr Mike Balonwu.
Anambra State was rece-ntly thrown into another round of political crisis when renegades and thugs wrea-ked havoc in the state by sacking the state Assembly complex, government house and other strategic locations in the state.
The mayhem has refused to die down even as the sec-urity operatives in the state have allegedly looked elsew-here while the violence rages on, apparently forcing the state lawmakers to run to Abuja for reprieve.
Masari who was appa-rently concerned about the insecurity and lawlessness in Anambra, declared that there is leadership failure in Ana-mbra as all leaders in the state have failed to find a perm-anent solution to the persi-stent political crisis in the state.
Meanwhile, the House yesterday resolved to debate the Anambra crisis today following a motion of urgent public importance moved by an Alliance for Democracy (AD), member from Osun State, Professor Shola Ade-yeye.
Adeyeye’s motion pra-yed the House to debate the matter yesterday by setting aside the House rules but the Speaker, Aminu Bello Masari, ruled that the matter be discussed today.
Earlier, the House leader, Hon Abdul Ningi, had du-ring an interactive session, told newsmen that the House had kept mum over the Ana-mbra crisis because nobody moved a motion in that res-pect. This, he said, was in addition to the fact that it would be subjudice for the House to discuss the matter which is in the courts.
However, a statement yesterday entitled, “Fresh Death Threat” Ngige is a pathological liar” which was signed by Chief Chukw-uemeka Anyasi, chairman of a grouped calling itself “Con-cerned People of Anambra,” alleged that Governor Chris Ngige was crying wolf over alleged threats to his life by Chief Chris Uba.
It would be recalled that Governor Ngige had allegedly written the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbe alleging that Chief Chris Uba and his group have perfected plans to kill him.
The statement described the alarm as false an that it was an attempt to thwart the peace efforts being initiated.”
