As robbers rampage in Auchi: Six policemen, polytechnic registrar, bank chief killed

By Benson Agwu

Correspondent, Benin City

Daring robbers, armed to the teeth, struck Auchi twice within six hours on Wednesday and, at the last count, had killed six police officers, the chief accountant of a bank and the registrar of the city’s polytechnic.

The first attack in the wee hours knocked the policemen dead, the second was in daylight, taking with it the lives of the banker and the registrar.

Police sources confirmed that the gang of robbers which raided the bank was the same that had invaded the Okpella-Auchi road earlier, killing six of the policemen on duty. They killed, looted and destroyed property worth millions at the bank.

Sources in Benin City disclosed that the criminals, dressed in Army uniform (camouflage), over-powered security men at the entrance of the bank before gaining entrance.

They bound up all the customers and headed to the strong room where they carted away an undisclosed huge sum of money.

The bank’s chief accountant, who lost his life in the robbery, was said to have been shot while putting up resistance.

Commercial activities in Auchi and its environs were brought to a halt by the two incidents. Several shops and offices hurriedly closed down, transporters withdrew their vehicles from the Benin-Auchi-Abuja roads.

Edo State Police Commissioner Paul Ochonu has reportedly deployed more armed policemen to the robbery prone zone in the Auchi axis.

A top police officer, who did not want his name in print, confirmed the killings but gave an assurance that the robbers would be apprehended “in the next few hours”.

Police Public Relations Officer Fatai Kinyomi could not be reached for comment.
