Missing ship: naval rating stuns panel

    ABIDOUN ADELAJA, Abuja

HOUSE of Representatives Committee probing the missing ship saga was yesterday stunned when a Naval rating, M.A. Emmanuel, deployed to guard MT African Pride while under custody, alleged that Naval authorities were responsible for loss of the vessel.

Seaman Emmanuel, while testifying before the committee, said from the harsh condition he was exposed to while guarding the ship, it was obvious that there was a conspiracy by authorities of the Nigerian Navy to effect release of MT African Pride.

Narrating his ordeal, Emmanuel said while on board the vessel, he was left without food for two weeks and left in the midst of seven Russian crew suspects in the ship.

He said: "Lt. Commander Maiyaki deployed me from MT Moaz on July 19, 2004 to MT African Pride where I was abandoned to starve for two weeks with seven Russians on board."

"I had never had the experience to man ships, judging by the number of years, two years I served in the Navy I ought not to have been deployed to man ship".

The seaman said while aboard the ship, he was fed by the fierce looking Russian crew members with porridge until he took ill.

The House Committee also yesterday summoned the acting Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) West, Naval Commodore A. Ajadi, Commander Yusuf and Alhaji Dako to appear before it in connection with the missing ship.
