ANAMBRA CRISIS
‘It’s between you and us’
KENNETH OFOMA, Abakaliki
First
civilian governor of Anambra State and former adviser to President Obasanjo on
political matters Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife has condemned the recent wanton
destruction of property in Anambra State, describing the action as a clear case
of madness.
Dr. Ezeife made the condemnation while addressing members of
the presidential committee on resolution of Anambra crisis who were in the state
to assess the level of destruction by hoodlums.
He said that the effort of the committee
was relevant only to the extent that the parties to the dispute were properly
identified, saying that the case was between President Olusegun Obasanjo and the
people of Anambra State.
Ezeife told the committee led by Ebonyi
State Governor, Dr. Sam Egwu to tell "President Obasanjo and the Federal
Government to come back and rebuild all that were destroyed."
He said that since paid agents of the
Federal Government looked the other way while hoodlums destroyed the
infrastructure for local government elections, council ,elections in the state
"will now be when able."
"In the meantime he should no longer
withhold allocations to the local governments. Those local governments are still
there, they are human beings being administered."
Ezeife commended the people of the state
for exercising restraint in the face of provocation when the vandals destroyed
property in various parts of the state and gave kudos to students of Nnamdi
Azikiwe University, Awka who watched the hoodlums set their bus ablaze without
joining the fray.
"Without it, this people would have got
what they wanted. The message was clear: go and make some noise, kill a number
of people, burn a number of places and I will give you state of emergency," he
said.
He threw his support for the setting up of
a judicial commission of inquiry with a clear terms of reference as well as the
commencement of public sitting by the state House of Assembly to unravel the
perpetrators.
Chairman of the Presidential Peace
Committee, Dr. Sam Egwu told the people of the state that those who participated
in the destruction must be prosecuted according to the law.
Governor Egwu decried the role of the
police in the matter, lamenting that all that were destroyed were not Governor
Ngige’s property, but the property of Anambra State and that of some private
individuals, and wondered why the police stood by and watched the destruction
took place.
The committee visited the areas of
destruction, which include, Ikenga Hotels, the Women Development Centre, the
state House of Assembly, the headquarters of the State Judiciary, Anambra State
Independent Electoral Commission building, the Anambra State Broadcasting
Service, among others.
