ANPP Leaders Give Etiebet Confidence Vote
•Holds convention next year From Chuks Okocha just back from Maidugiri, 11.29.2004
All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting ended in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital with a confidence vote passed on its National Executive Committee led by Chief Don Etiebet. The party also announced that it would hold its national convention in May 2005. But the rival faction headed by Lt.-General Jerry Useni (rtd), also in Abuja held its meeting at the same time the Maiduguri meeting was going on and said opposition to Etiebet was due to the supremacy of the party constitution. The party also approved the appointment of new members into its Board of Trustees. It stipulated the sum of one million Naira as membership fee for each member of the Board. The new trustees are Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, who was the party's presidential candidate in the last presidential election, the seven serving ANPP governors, all former ANPP governors who are still members of the party, Chief Mike Ahamba, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Prince Tony Momoh, Alhaji Sule Hamma and Dr. Bashir Kurfi. Others are Alhaji Oladunni Ayandipo, Senator Saidu Kumo, Major-General Victor Malu (rtd), ANPP Senate Leader, ANPP House of Representatives Leader, Hajia Najatu Mohammed, Mrs.Bridget Orjikwe, Angy Uba, Chief Ekerete Akai, Hajia Bisirat Naibi, Admiral Mustafa Nyako, Alhaji M.C.Tahir, Mrs. J.Uwehe and Chief D.U.Edebiri. Governor of Zamfara State extended Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa's apologies for not attending the Maiduguri NEC meeting. In its first resolution moved by Chairman of the party in Enugu State, Chief Emma Eneukwu and seconded by the Acting Governor of Kano State, the party unanimously, "re-affirmed its implicit confidence in the leadership of Chief Don Etiebet as the National Chairman." The Maidugiri NEC meeting was attended by 131 registered members of the party. Also the NEC put to rest the claim by Secretary of the BOT, Alhaji Gambo Mogaji that the organ of the party summoned a joint BOT/NEC meeting by rejecting the resolution of the BOT meeting of October 22, 2004 that it is summoning a joint BOT/NEC meeting on November 30. According to the communiqué of the meeting, the NEC rejects the summons of the joint meeting and rather said it re-affirms the Peace and Reconciliation Committee headed by the Governor of Yobe state, Bukka Abba Ibrahim. The NEC also fixed the national convention of the party to take place by May 2005, stating that this resolution is for the information of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The ANPP crisis which began earlier in the year has lasted fostered for some time as all efforts to get Useni and his group to maintain the status quo had failed.
