Shagari Preaches Peace at Okada
From Omon-Julius Onabu in Benin-City, 11.29.2004
Former President Shehu Shagari has appealed to all Nigerians, of whatever ethnic and socio-political leaning, to eschew all manner of bitterness and violence in their agitation for certain rights in the land. Shagari made the passionate plea at the weekend while speaking at the second convocation ceremony of the Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, where he was honoured with a doctorate degree alongside other notable personalities from Nigeria and South Africa. Shagari was responding on behalf of the recipients of the honorary degrees. The honours list at Igbinedion University, Saturday, which apparently targeted personages in business, politics and humanitarian or philanthropic fields, included Mrs Maryam Babangida, who was accompanied to the ceremony by her husband and Nigerian former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida; Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela from South Africa; Nigerian pioneer architect, Chief Hope Harriman; Globacom chairman, Dr Mike Adenuga (Jnr); Mr John Kennedy; A serving minister in South Africa, Hon. Sydney Mufamadi; and, HRH Igwe Alex E. Nwokedi. Chancellor and proprietor of the university, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, assisted by his deputy and heir, Governor Lucky Igbinedion, conducted the honorary awards ceremony. Shagari said that crime did not pay anybody ultimately, pointing out that only under an atmosphere of peace could progress be made and democratic principles nurtured. He expressed deep regret at the spate of violence in the country in recent time and urged Nigerians from big or small ethnic groups, and of whatever political or religious persuasion, to give peace a chance.
