Privatization: BPE Slates NICON, Eleme, PH Refinery for 2005
From Cletus Akwaya in Abuja, 11.29.2004
The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) has said that the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), Eleme Petrochemicals Company Ltd. and the Port Harcourt refinery top the list of public firms slated for privatisation next year. Other enterprises slated for sale in 2005 include Abuja International Hotel (concessioning), National Fertilizer Company of Nigeria (NAFCON) NICON Hilton Hotel, Abuja, Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria (PAN) and the Volkswagen of Nigeria (VON) There are also the Federal Superphosphate Fertilizer Company Kaduna, Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC) and the Nigeria Mining Corporation (NMC) "Given the amount of work already taken on the following enterprises, we are hopeful that they would be privatised before the end of 2005," said the Director General of BPE, Dr Julius Bala, in Abuja. Bala said the decision to give priority to the big enterprises was to underscore the seriousness of the present management of BPE to speed up the privatization programme. He said the desire of the PBE was to conclude privatization of the major utilities during the tenure of the Obasanjo administration. This, he said, explained the commitment of BPE to the completion of the Ports reforms and privatization (concessioning) process. He said World Bank consultants have been hired to draw a time table of activities leading to the privatization of the Nigerian Railways. Bala was optimistic that the House of Representatives would soon pass the power sector reform bill, already passed by the Senate to pave way for liberalization of the power sector and especially, the unbundling and privatization of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA).
