Yes No Indifferent View results AYCF Chides Group over Northern Unity Conference By Idowu Sowunmi, 11.29.2004 Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has condemned the statement credited to Middle Belt Progressive Movement (MB-PF)'s President, DIG Potter Dabup (rtd), saying the group's stance is a call to the Northern disintegration. In an interview with THISDAY, AYCF Chairman, Alhaji Yerima Shettima, said the Northern region is well known for its unity but described Dabup as a paid political contractor who has been commissioned to do the job of sowing the seed of disunity and fan the ember of discord in the region. His words: "This was never part of the legacy we received from our founding fathers. They never discriminate against any part of the region whether North-central, North-east or North-west. Our forefathers had done their very best to unite not only the Northern region but to integrate the region to the corporate entity of Nigeria. Therefore it would unwise and condemnable for anybody to think of putting asunder among the people of the region." Dabup, in a newspaper report (not THISDAY), berated the region and dissociated Middle Belt from the Northern Unity Conference. But Shettima said the conference being put together by the 19 Northern governors would not only come up with a plausible agenda to move the region forward but also chart ways for the region's political success come 2007 and economic empowerment of the people of the region. He commended the governors for initiating the idea most especially Governor Saminu Turaki of Jigawa State, noting that this is the best time to discuss issues relating to the region to empower the people of the region politically, socially and economically. The Arewa Youth leader added that the group would mobilise all other youth groups from the region, stressing that the region would surely present one candidate for 2007 presidential election and that such candidate would be generally acceptable to both Northerners and Southerners.
