Oil Refineries: Church Wants Contractors Prosecuted
11.29.2004
Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN) has urged Federal Government to hand over those involved in the failed turn around maintenance (TAM) of the country's refineries to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution in the spirit of its anti-corruption and transparency crusade. In a statement issued at the end of a meeting of its General Assembly Executive Committee in Calabar and signed by the new Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt. Rev. Ubon Bassey Usung and Principal Clerk, Rev. (Dr) Benebo Fubara-Manuel, PCN expressed disappointment with Federal Government's revelation that a whopping sum of 800 million US dollars has been spent in the last five years to repair the refineries without any result. It called on government to vigorously pursue the plan to privatise the nation's four refineries to ensure the local supply of the nation's fuel needs, stressing that Nigeria has no business importing finished oil products as God has generously blessed her with vast crude oil resources. Noting with dismay the regular increase in the price of petroleum products and the resultant disruption of economic and social activities in the country, the church said though the deregulation of the downstream oil sector policy had some potential good, certain structures needed to be put in place for the policy to work. On the Niger Delta problem, PCN called on government to go beyond the cosmetic approach to address the root causes of the friction in the Niger Delta by providing basic amenities to improve the deplorable living conditions of the people of the area from where crude oil, the nation's economic mainstay, is produced. While hailing Federal Government for the restoration of democracy in Plateau State, the church said it was worried that government has not been able to stem the recurrent political crisis in Anambra State till now. It restated its call on Federal Government to pay priority attention to the energy and power as well as the agriculture sectors as these constitute the engine to drive the rural transformation, poverty alleviation and industrial development programmes of government. On the HIV/AIDS pandemic, PCN urged all stakeholders, including churches, humaniterian agencies and non-governmental organisations, to be more constructively involved in sensitising the people on the dangers of the pandemic and in addressing misconceptions and stigmatization of people living with AIDS.
