Anambra: Police Commission to Review Officers' Conduct
From George Oji in Abuja, 11.29.2004
The Police Service Commis-sion (PSC) will today hold an emergency meeting at it's national head office, Abuja to examine the various roles played by police officers and men in the three-day spate of arson and vandalisation wreaked on Anambra State by some political thugs. The meeting according to a statement by the commission is coming on the heels of several petitions from different groups and individuals to the commission condemning the role played by the Anambra State police Command in the crisis. One of such petitions, written by the Anambra State Govern-ment, demanded the immediate removal of the state police commissioner, Mr. Felix Ogbaudu. The state had in the petition complained about the unprofessional and partisan conduct of Ogbaudu in providing police support and protection to the arsonists, which made possible the destruction of such places as the Governor/ Deputy Governors offices, State Radio Station in Onitsha, office of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Women Development Centre among others. Also on its part, the Anambra State Leaders of Thought after an emergency meeting following the mayhem demanded the removal of the police commissioner over his alleged partisan role in the crisis. Sources at the commission revealed to THISDAY at the weekend that Chris Uba, Ngige's earstwhile godfather whose supporters are being fingered as the perpetrators of the vandalisation had on Tuesday, November 23, visited the Chairman of the Commission, Chief Simeon Okeke in his Abuja office. Okeke is also an indigene of the state. Although it was not clear why Uba made the visit, sources at the commission said it was not unconnected with efforts to stave any punishment being contemplated against the police Commissioner. Governor Chris Ngige was also reported to have paid a visit to Okeke the following day, Wednesday, after Uba's visit ostensibly to follow up on the state's earlier petition against Ogbaudu. The action of the commission would serve as a test to its credibility, given allegations of official backing for the political crisis in Anambra State. The commission is empowered by the constitution to recruit, promote, transfer and discipline police officers up till the rank of Deputy Inspector Generals of Police, with the exception of the Inspector General of police, who is answerable to the President and the Police Council.
