Law to Encourage Varsity Research Sought
From Bukola Olatunji and Juliana Taiwo in Abuja, 11.29.2004
The Federal Government has been called upon to enact appropriate legislation to encourage industries to patronise university research output. Participants at the first 'Nigerian Universities Rese-arch and Development Fair', just ended in Abuja, made the call in a communiquÈ issued at the end of the fair, adding that outcome of the fair should be communicated to industries. Drawn from 43 federal, state and private universities, as well as inter-varsity centres also said steps should be taken at the appropriate time to restrict importation of equipment that have been developed by universities. Government was also called upon to increase the quantum of funds for research activities in universities and give due recognition to scholars with great research achievements through the establishment of appropriate reward system, thus encouraging healthy competition. While commending the Federal Government and the National Universities Com-mission (NUC), for organising the fair, they called on government to support research efforts of state universities and set up a prototype development fund. They also recommended that enabling environment be created in the universities to allow research and development to thrive. “Proprietors - Federal, State and private owners - should upgrade teaching and research equipment in their universities by devoting appropriate resources for this purpose, they said. University researchers sho-uld also be afforded the opportunity to learn how to patent their output. On the part of the universities, it was resolved that they establish research and development centres, where marketable research efforts are coordinated and brought to the public for commercialisation urging those who have established such centres should strengthen them for improved productivity. Universities should embark on marketing drives to sell the enormous outputs displayed at the fair to the private sector, while networking among scholars, facilitated at the fair, should be sustained.”it said.
