DHL Expands Operations in US

Lagos
Nigeria's leading international courier service provider, DHL is consolidating on its capabilities to expressly deliver documents and parcels to, from or within the United States. The company with its network of 5,000 offices serving more than 120,000 destinations around the globe revealed that it is expanding its services to become one of the leading shipping companies in the United States. DHL since its formation in 1969 has been a minor player in the domestic express segment of the world's largest economy. The company was formed with a focus on the creation of what was then a niche market, the express delivery of shipments across national borders. Its older competitors soon joined the fray though, DHL has remained the market leader in the international express delivery segment. Despite its premier position in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa, DHL has been a fringe player in the US domestic market where it had only a 2 per cent market share in an industry worth $48 billion a year. This position however changed in mid 2003 when DHL acquired the ground operations of Airborne Express for $1.05 billion effectively puting an end to the decades old duopoly of FedEx and UPS in the domestic market of the United States. With this acquisition, DHL now has 11.5 per cent market share of the domestic segment and 21.5 per cent of the international segment in the US market. When combined with its almost 40 per cent share of the rest of the world, DHL has emerged the globes biggest player in the express delivery industry. The Marketing Services manager of DHL, Mr Patrick Egbuchunam, noted that "as one of the top 100 corporations in the world, DHL is continually improving its global network including more than doubling the size of its US business." This has been made possible by an investment of over $1.2 billion to build and upgrade its infrastructure in the country DHL delivers one billion packages per year around the world with 386 million in the United States alone. Cataloguing DHL's strengths in the United States, Egbuchunam revealed that DHL now delivers to every zip code in the contiguous US. DHL has 281 aircraft for service within United States out of 420 dedicated aircraft serving DHL's global network. According to Egbuchunam, clients shipping to the United States can also enjoy shipper's interest insurance, an insurance policy that protects shipments from physical loss or damage that can occur due to external causes during transport. In addition, consignees will benefit from standard and special import/export clearance handling services as well as constant information on the status of their shipments all through the transport cycle.
