From Iyefu Adoba in Abuja, 11.29.2004
FCT
A delegation of Eurpean Union's (EUs) Heads of Mission will today visit Sokoto State to discuss issues and exchange views on the role of Islamic institutions as well as economic reform and development in Northern Nigeria. The visit is part of the European Union's on- going political dialogue with Nigerians. During the three day visit, organised by the Royal Netherlands Embassy acting in its capacity as President of the EU in Nigeria, the delegation will meet with state government officials, religious leaders and non-governmental organizations. In addition, the Heads of Mission will meet with nationals of the EU living and working in the region. The dialogue according to a statement signed by EU Press Officer, Mr. Kelechi Onyemaobi is geared towards assisting Nigeria in its efforts towards democratization, the promotion of peace and stability in the region, and the enhancement of economic development. It will be recalled that last month, as part of efforts towards finding amicable resolution to the crisis in the Niger Delta region, an extended European Union troika paid a visit to Rivers State. Members of the delegation included Netherlands Ambassador Aart Jan Verdegaal, (representing the Presidency of the EU), British High Commissioner Richard Gozney, (representing the next Presidency of the EU), French Ambassador Yves Gaudeul and Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Nigeria Mr. Leonadis Tezapsidis. Discussed at that meeting were operations of the oil and gas industry, in particular of European multinational companies as well as the safety of nationals of EU member states living and working in the Delta Region.
