Sodipo Wins Copyright Medal of Honour

Lagos lawyer, Dr Bankole Sodipo has won the 2004 Copyright Medal of Honour. Sodipo is the President of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Nigeria (IPLAN), an association of Nigerian law firms and corporations protecting trademarks, patents, designs and copyright. The first Nigerian to obtain a Ph.D in Intellectual Property Law, Sodipo has published many ground breaking books including Nigerian Investment Laws and Intellectual Property Rights (University of London, London, 1994) and Piracy and Counterfeiting: GATT Trips and Developing Countries (Kluver Law International, London -- The Hague -- Boston, 1997). Sodipo has been a major participant in the Reform of Intellectual Property Legislation in Nigeria. In 1988, at the young age of 23, he was very actively involved in copyright development, both as a member of the National Planning Committee on Copyright Law and Adminis-tration and the Copyright Law Drafting Committee that drafted the Copyright Act No. 47 of 1988.
As a major event of the 2004 annual general meeting of Performing and Mechanical Rights Society (PMRS), the Copyright Medal of Honour will be presented to Sodipo at the Unit Centre Ikeja, Lagos on December 7. It will be recalled that the Copyright Medal of Honour was instituted in 2003 by Performing and Mechanical Rights Society (PMRS) as an annual award to recognise the individual who, during a period, has acted ina most significant way to promote the respect for the rights of the creators of works of the mind in Nigeria. Another highlight of the 2004 PMRS AGM is the distribution of royalties to the owners of copryight in musical works and sound recordings. This will be the third year in succession that PMRS will call on members to approve such distribution at its AGM. If approved, the distribution, which will take place immediately, will signify the continuing establishment of the copyright culture in Nigeria. The PMRS AGM will also receive the Chairman's Report and the Report of the Auditors to the society. Elections will also hold to fill vacancies on the board. The present PMRS boad is made up of some of the most celebrated names in the Nigerian music industry such as Evangelist (Dr) ebenezer Obey-Fabiyi 9MFR), Ms Onyeka Onwenu (MFR), Sir Victor Uwaifor (MON), Alhaji Dan Maraya Jos (MON), Erelu Keji Okunowo, Mr Laolu Akins, Chief G.A.D. Tabansi, Mr Toju Ejueyitche, Mr Rowland Onwuama and Mr Cletus Adeoye George. The PMRS board is chaired by Chief Tony Okoroji. The General manager of the society is veteran producer and highlife star Mr Chris Ajilo. The membership of PMRS includes the icons of Nigerian music such as Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe, Chief Oliver De Coque, Y.. Ajao, Alhaji Kollington Ayinla, Sir Shina Peters, Daniel Wilson, Harry Mosco, Ras Kimono, Prine David Bull, Fatai Rolling Dollar, Orlando Julius and Orlando Owoh.
