From Okon Bassey in Port Harcourt, 11.29.2004
Rivers
Rivers State Governor, Dr Peter Odili, has reiterated government’s determination to engage youth in gainful employment. Odili made this remark while flagging-off the special statewide youth rehabilitation programme at Emohua, headquarters of Emohua Local Government Area. Odili who advised that nobody should waste time to look for who to blame for the unfortunate incident in the state maintained that "the time to close the old chapter has come." He said the provision of 4,800 jobs for unemployed youths in the state was only a starting point promising that more job opportunities would be opened so that youths would have more jobs to choose from. "Whatever you have to do to earn legitimate salary is a good job" Odili asserted, noting that no job is a mean one. Odili said the only way to keep poverty permanently away is to go back to land and challenged every Local Government Area in the state to provide land for agriculture. The state chief executive sympathized with the people of Emohua for the hardships they have suffered in the past, saying that the time for change for the people has come. Odili who disclosed that work on the Emohua General Hospital would begin next week directed the Chairman of the Council to come forward with names of three indigenous contractors from whom one would he awarded the contract for the hospital. He announced that major roads in the area would be reconstructed while all public schools destroyed in the wake of the unfortunate crisis in the area would also be reactivated. "I’m charging this Committee on rehabilitation in collaboration with tile Council to bring a list of all public institutions destroyed in Emohua during the unfortunate crisis so that Government will begin the process of repairing them," Odili promised. The Chairman, state Committee on Youth Rehabilitation and Re-integration. Chief Priscilla Vikue said the programme is designed to provide employment for youths in the state. Vikue charged those who would be engaged in the programme to take their task seriously describing the opportunity as a stepping-stone to a brighter tomorrow.
