Gov Appeals to Numan Communities
From Abel Orih Idoma in Yola, 11.29.2004
Adamawa
Governor, Boni Haruna of Adamawa has appealed to the people and the immediate communities within which Savannah Sugar Company Numan, is located, to cooperate with the new ownership of the company to achieve its objectives. The Governor made the appeal when Chairman of Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliyu Dangote who was in the state to assess the progress of work on the reactivation of the company, paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Yola. He explained that there is a great difference between government ownership and private management of such investment, adding that he is especially happy with the laudable integration programme of the new management of the company, with focuses on employment generation. Haruna explained that the youth empowerment programme of the company is in line with the aspiration of his administration’s 2005 budget, which is christened ‘Budget of Empowerment’. He said the state government is more concerned on how the company can impact on the lives of the people especially the immediate communities, and indeed the stimulation of the economy of the state instead of paying physical cash to the government in form of taxes. The governor also expressed his appreciation to the federal government for payment of the 80 percent outstanding entitlement of the staff of the company and hoped that they would reciprocate the gesture by working harmoniously with the new management of the company. He similarly advised the communities around the area to desist from attempts by some unscrupulous persons who have been trying to create negative impression about the privatization programme of the federal government, pointing out that no body would benefit better than the immediate communities. The governor assured the Chairman of the state government’s support and assistance to the company in execution and implementation of the programme. Speaking earlier, the Chairman Dangote Group of Companies, Alhaji Aliyu Aliko Dangote disclosed that when the company is fully reactivated, about 5 thousand workers would be engaged on permanent basis. He said in addition to that, the new management also intends to open training centres whereby youths can be trained for at least three months after which they would be granted financial assistance on revolving loan so that the presence of the company would be felt by the immediate communities and the people of the state at large.
