The British High Commission has announced that it has arrested 25 visa seekers who submitted forged documents to its visa section. This follows a recent announcement that it will crackdown on prospective travellers to United Kingdom with questionable documents. Culprits face the prospect of criminal prosecution and jail term. David Wyatt, Deputy High Commissioner expressed delight that "our efforts have been so successful. And I would like to thank the Nigerian Police for the excellent work they did in apprehending those involved." He said the High Commission will continue to act against those who believe that fraud and forgery might help them secure a UK visa, stressing that "stamping out this criminal activity can only help us achieve our objective of making it easier for legitimate Nigerian visa customers to get visas and travel to the UK with minimal fuss." It urged all its visa customers to think carefully before submitting their applications, and be absolutely sure of the authenticity of documents. In an earlier statement, the High Commission, warned that submission of forged documents as part of the visa application process is a criminal offence under the Nigerian Criminal Code, and can lead to arrest and prosecution. "With immediate effect, applications are even more carefully scrutinized and comprehensive inquiries will be carried out to check the authenticity of documents submitted to support them," the statement said. "This includes bank statement, income tax certificates, invitation letters, employment letters, passport copies etc." It said it is determined to stamp out the use of forged documents in support of UK visa applications by working hand in hand with the Nigerian Police. "The High Commission enjoys an excellent working relationship with the Nigerian Police and this cooperation has resulted in many successful prosecutions. We also work closely with banks, the Board of Internal Revenue and other authorities in matters relating to the production of forged documents," the statement added. Accordingly, the High Commission urged its visa customers to think very carefully before submitting their applications and to avoid submitting documents they are not absolutely sure of their authenticity.
