A combined efforts of crack detectives in Kwara State Police Command, as well as local communities vigilance groups along Idofian/Koko/ Omupo/Ajase/Omu-Aran federal highway, has paid off with the killing of eight suspected armed robbers at Oke-Ode/Ora in Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state. Following the rising wave of armed robbery on the highway, the police began collaborative efforts with various vigilance groups in the area, aimed at arresting the hoodlums as well as their backers. The state Governor, Bukola Saraki, had enjoined support of chairmen of the affected local councils, and monarchs at a meeting, with a view to finding a lasting solution to the menace. At the meeting, Saraki stressed the need for them to complement efforts of the police by raising vigilance groups, who shall be paid by the council bosses, to patrol the highway and nip further atrocities of the robbers in the bud. One of them, Alhaji AbdulKareem Adewunmi, Irepodun Council Chairman, told newsmen in Ilorin that the meeting with the governor had far reaching effect with the council bosses, resolving to come out strongly against the armed robbers. Another Alhaji Tajudeen Aro assured that with the governor's directive, he and his colleagues have resolved to contribute vigilance groups on the highway, for a lasting travelling comfort for road users. A statement by the command spokesman, Marcus Gideon, (ASP) yesterday said the robbers, numbering about 15, met their waterloo when sighted in a bush roasting yam. According to the statement, the men of the underworld belonged to a gang of hoodlums who had been terrorsing commuters along GanmoAjase-Ipo axis in recent times. It said eight of the robbers were shot and killed on the spot, while the rest escaped with bullet wounds. It said dangerous weapons such as guns; cutlasses; and other items including one Nokina 12 band radio cassette player; two pairs of slippers; clothing material and a water can, were recovered during the incident. It pleaded with members of the public to assist the police with information that could lead to hoodlums' arrest.
